Surgery is used to diagnose, stage and treat cancer, and to manage certain cancer-related symptoms. For many patients with stomach cancer, surgery is the primary treatment. The surgery for the stomach cancer will depend on which part of the stomach the cancer is in. It involves the removal of part or all of the stomach.
Treatment for stomach cancer may involve surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation therapy. You'll probably receive more than one type of treatment. For example, chemotherapy may be given before or after surgery. It's often given at the same time as radiation therapy.
