Biography :

Professor Bing Song graduated from China Medical University and achieved MD in 1995, and achieved MSc in 1998. He visited Hamamatsu University School of Medicine Japan between 1997 and 1999 as a visiting scholar, during which time he received scientific training in Photo Medical Research Centre. Professor Song joined Professors Colin McCaig and Min Zhao’s lab at School of Medical Sciences, University of Aberdeen, UK in 1999 as a postdoc research fellow, and achieved his PhD in 2004. In 2005, he was awarded a prestigious Royal Society University Research Fellowship for 8 years, and promoted to senior lecturer in 2007. In 2009, Professor Song joined School of Dentistry, Cardiff University, UK as a chair, and expanded his research topics to stem cells replacement therapy in treating central nervous system diseases.

Biography :

Kenko Jian-hong YU  got his  PhD degree in orthodontics from the National Tokyo Medical and Dental University (in Japan) and his research topic is mainly on biomechanics and Finite Element Analysis (computer simulation). He is  now an assistant professor and dean of orthodontic department in China Medical University, a Medical Center in central Taiwan (located in the Taichung City).

Biography :

After completing his residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the State University of New York, Downstate, Kings County Hospital Center in 1974, he taught and practiced the full-scope of the specialty at Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri. He became board certified in 1978. He came to Virginia Commonwealth University, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 1981 to continue his academic career as director of undergraduate oral and maxillofacial surgery and have held that position for 30 years. Funded research includes the areas of implant dentistry and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Other areas investigated are clinical issues of bacterimia resulting from suture removal, effects of third molar surgery on gingival and plaque indicies, and pain relief for localized osteitis. He received training in microsurgery in 2009 and, have since, limited his  clinical practice to managing peripheral trigeminal nerve injuries. He is presently engaged in active clinical research in the field of traumatic trigeminal nerve injury.

Dr. Sompop Bencharit is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Prosthodontics, School of Dentistry and an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacology, School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC). He received his DDS in 1994 and Clinical Diploma in Prosthodontics in 1996 from Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand. He earned his Certificate and Master Degree in Prosthodontics in 1999, a PhD in Oral Biology in 2003, and a Certificate in Clinical Research in 2008 from UNC. Dr. Bencharit is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics and a Fellow of the American College of Prosthodontists. He is one of a very few clinician-scientists who are both board-certified dental specialists and PhD scientists. He serves as a reviewer for over ten international scientific and dental journals.

Dr. Juan Martin Palomo is the Director of Orthodontics, and the director of the Craniofacial Imaging Center at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio USA. Dr. Palomo has presented both nationally and internationally, and authored several peer-reviewed publications on the topic of informatics and craniofacial imaging. Dr. Palomo’s career contributions to craniofacial imaging have been recognized through research awards in both medical and dental fields. Dr. Palomo has been member of the IADR for over 10 years, and he strives to bring craniofacial biology to the forefront of the community at large as he is the primary advisor for the Medical Imaging Exhibit at the Great Lakes Science Center. Additionally, he is a board certified orthodontist, and an active member of both the Orthodontics and the Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Associations. Dr. Palomo is currently the president for the Omnicron Kappa Upsilon National Honor Dental Society.

Sorin Uram-Tuculescu is originally from Timisoara, Romania, where he received his DMD Degree and PhD. He served as faculty at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy “V. Babes” Timisoara - School of Dental Medicine, while maintaining a private practice in general dentistry. Once in the United States he attended University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he obtained his American DDS as well as MS and Certificate in Prosthodontics.  He has contributed to numerous publications, journals, and textbooks.  Dr. Uram–Tuculescu is the recipient of the G. Randolph and Ann Babcock Fellowship, the Freedland Advanced Dental Education Fellowship, has received recognition from the Academy of Prosthodontics Foundation – Research Grants Committee, and has also been awarded the Helicon Editor’s Prize as well as the Romanian Academy Prize “Gheorghe Marinescu“

Saroj M. Bahl received her Ph.D (Nutrition) degree from Delhi University, India. She is currently an Associate Professor (with tenure) at the University of Texas-Houston Dental Branch. Dr. Bahl has had extensive teaching experience, at both undergraduate and graduate level. She has received several honors and awards for teaching excellence, including the prestigious John P. McGovern Award (UT-HHSC) more than once. She is currently serving as a Board Member of the Houston HIV Prevention Community Planning Group (Has been a Member since 2006) and is the Chair of the Prioritization Committee. She is also a member of the Work Group for Evidence-Based Guidelines for HIV/AIDS for American Dietetic Association. Her presentations have included several that were related to nutritional management of the HIV infected patient. Dr. Bahl has co-authored a book entitled “Nutritional care of HIV-Positive persons-A Manual for Individuals and their Caregivers” which was published by CRC press, Florida in 1995.

Chung H. Kau is Chairman and Professor at the Department of Orthodontics at the University of Alabama Birmingham. He is an active clinical practioner and researcher with a keen interest in three-dimensional and translational research. His imaging facility is in possession of the Sirona Galileos CBCT device and the 3dMD surface imaging device. He has served as a research mentor to a number of researchers, residents and pre-doctoral students. One of these includes UTHSC’s only 2008 Fulbright scholar. In 2010, he recieved the King James IV Professorship from the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh.

Dr. Seiichi Yamano is Assistant Professor of Prosthodontics at New York University College of Dentistry. Dr. Yamano first earned his dental degree from Nihon University in 1990 and then a PhD in Medical Sciences from Tokyo Medical University in 1994 in Japan. Then, he came to the US as a Research Fellow at the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research/National Institutes of Health in 1997. Also, he received his DMD from the University of Pennsylvania in 2004, and a Prosthodontics certificate and MMSc in Oral Biology from Harvard University in 2007. Currently, his laboratory is focused on tissue engineering for oral and craniofacial regeneration using gene therapeutic technology, especially novel nonviral vectors.

Lakshmyya Kesavalu was born on February 28, 1945, in Asanambut village, Tamil Nadu state, India. But he grew up in village, later moved to Gudiyatham, Vellore for middle, high school, and college until 1965. He is the first generation in the village and in the family to enter for college education. He was especially interested in sociology, and medicine. Parents, spouse sacrifice and encouragement drove him to excel his studies and career. After his professional Veterinary Medicine degree in 1971 and later specialized in Medical Microbiology and Immunology in Premier Medical Institution in 1978 (All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi), he moved to U.S.A “The Land of Opportunity” for postdoctoral fellowship in 1986. He was blessed with caring spouse and two daughters. After 3 years of mycobacteriology research at Denver, Colorado, moved to new fascinating area of dental research (Periodontal disease pathogenesis) at University of Texas at San Antonio in 1989 and later at University of Kentucky in 2000. Since 2006, he is continuing dental research in the Department of Periodontology at University of Florida.

Andrew John Smith, Professor and Hon Consultant Bacteriologist. Andrew Smith qualified BDS from the University of Wales College of Medicine in 1987. After a short spell in general dental practice, he took a position as a Senior House Officer and Research Assistant at Cardiff Dental Hospital and subsequently awarded funding from the Welsh Office to undertake a PhD investigating the microbial degradation of periodontal proteoglycans which was awarded in 1994. In 1993 he was appointed lecturer in the Department of Adult Dental Care, University of Glasgow Dental Hospital during which time he gained the FDS examination from the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh. In 1995 he was appointed Lecturer and Specialist Registrar in Microbiology training at the Oral Microbiology Diagnostic Laboratory in Glasgow Dental Hospital and the Microbiology Department at Glasgow Royal Infirmary.
