Biography :

Dr. Sahdeo Prasad obtained his Ph.D. (Biotechnology), CSJM University, Kanpur, India and Indian Institute of Toxicology Research (CSIR), Lucknow, India. During doctoral research program, he extensively worked on signal transduction pathways in both in vivo and in vitro tumor models. Before joining his PhD program, Dr. Prasad received National Eligibility Test (CSIR - UGC-NET), Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) and Indian Council of Medical Research Junior Research Fellowship award (ICMR-JRF) by Govt. of India. After PhD, he joined as Post - Doctoral Fellow in Department of Experimental Therapeutics, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, USA. His expertise is in the area of molecular biology with particular reference to molecular mechanisms of signal transduction in tumor cells. Dr. Prasad has discovered a number of phytochemicals with chemo-preventive effects against a variety of cancers and their mechanism of action. The current research focuses of Dr. Prasad are on investigating the effects of chemo-preventive and chemotherapeutic agents among natural products that could suppress the activation of pro-inflammatory transcription factors NF-kB and STAT3. Besides these, Dr. Prasad’s work is also focused on the effect of natural compounds on death receptor pathways, bone loss and chemosensitization of tumor cells. He has over 80 National and International publications, abstracts Indexed in 10 International conferences. He is also an editorial board member of various reputed journals.

Dr Amit Kumar Tyagi received his PhD degree in Applied Microbiology from Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, New Delhi, India where he studied the antimicrobial potential of different phytochemicals against food spoiling and disease causing microorganisms in in-vivo and in-vitro food models. During his PhD, he was awarded for European grant ‘Erasmus Mundus Corporation Window’ for doing part of his thesis work in University of Bologna, Italy. His work at The university of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center revealed that TNF exhibit pro-inflammatory activities and may mediate carcinogenesis through the activation of a transcription factor NF-κB. The gene products regulated by NF-κB have now been linked to cellular transformation, tumor cell survival, proliferation, invasion, angiogenesis, metastasis, chemoresistance, and radioresistance. Mostly carcinogens, tumor promoters, growth factors, inflammatory agents, chemotherapeutic agents, radiation, viruses, bacteria, cigarette smoke, alcohol and other life style factors activate NF-κB and another transcription factor STAT3. Dr Tyagi’s research group is working on safe and multi-targeting chemopreventive agents derived from natural resources suppress NF-κB and STAT3 pathway and suppress tumorigenesis.

Biography :

studies of retinal degenerations caused by metabolic defects, particularly dyslipidemias involving defective cholesterol metabolism (e.g., Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome), using pharmacological and transgenic animal models. Current studies are focused on the role of lipid and protein oxidation in the underlying mechanisms of photoreceptor cell death in such retinal degenerations, using a combination of genomic, proteomic, and lipidomic approaches.

Biography :

Dr. Pang received his MD in 1988 from China Medical University. He became an attending doctor in Ophthalmology, 2nd Affiliated Hospital of CMU in 1993 before he was sent to Japan for further training in research. Dr. Pang got his PhD in 1999 from Tokyo Medical and Dental University because of his finding on blue light damage to RPE cells. During his PhD course, Dr. Pang found a new type of Retinitis Pigmentosa due to vitamin E deficiency caused by an alpha-tocopherol transferase mutation. Oral administration of vitamin E stopped the progression of visual deterioration for the next 10 years. This experience prompted him to a postdoctoral position in Dr. Blanks’ lab at Oakland University in 1999. He tested adenoviral and lentiviral vectors via subretinal injections to rescue the photoreceptor degeneration seen in rd1 mice. Although the technical difficulties make the subretinal injection-related damage obvious in the mouse, especially in young pups, it is this gene replacement technique that captured his interest and remains the focus of his research program until he becomes a mouse expert.
