Biography :

Dr. K. Stephen Suh is currently the director of Genomics and Biomarkers Program at the John Theurer Cancer Center of Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey. His interest is translational and personalized medicine, biomarker discovery and development of molecular diagnostic and prognostic assays for multiple human cancer types. He uses bioinformatics, genomics and proteomics approaches to discover biomarkers for early detection, to predict clinical outcome and to enhance personalized cancer care.  Current research projects include lymphoma to model liquid tumors and ovarian, breast and prostate cancers to represent solid tumors. His graduate training at the University of Texas was focused on basic science by studying molecular pathways and cellular signaling of Src family of tyrosine kinases. He finished his postdoctoral training and research/staff fellowship at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) from 1998 to 2007. At the NCI, he led a team of scientists to discover Chloride Intracellular Channel 4 (CLIC4) as the biomarker for tumor progression and became a world expert in molecular circuitry of CLIC pathways. At the NCI, he focused on translational science by working with carcinogenesis and xenograft mouse models.  He is currently developing expertise in biomarker-based bench-to-bed side research and clinical science at the medical center.  He also collaborated with industry and academic partners on tissue engineering of primary tumors for personalized drug screening, genome sequencing to identify DNA sequence based biomarkers and knowledge environment-based bioinformatics for data mining.  Dr. Suh presents his works at national and international scientific conferences and has received numerous recognitions and awards from the National Institute of Health/National Cancer Institute NIH/NCI, American Association of Cancer Research AACR, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Aspen Cancer Conference and Society for Investigative Dermatology.

Biography :

My expertise covers a broad area of cancer research including chemoprevention, targeted therapy, and cancer nanomedicine. During my postdoctoral period, I have investigated detailed molecular mechanisms of the anti-cancer effect of nuclear hormone receptors in carcinogenesis in breast cancer. To further expand my research expertise in nanotechnology and drug delivery, I had an additional experience as a Research Assistant Professor at The University of Texas Houston, medical school and have developed delivery strategies for tumor targeting and sustained delivery. I have recruited as a Tenure Track Assistant Professor at the Thomas Jefferson University in conjunction with Kimmel Cancer Center in 2010. I am also a faculty member of the KCC Endocrine Mechanisms and Hormone Action in Cancer Program, which focus on breast cancer signaling and etiology. Nanotechnology is an emerging area of research that can potentially bring a major breakthrough in the detection and therapy for cancer. Based on the given number of nanotechnology based clinical trials that are underway, I believe that an addition of nanotechnology will be highly beneficial for readers of Translational Medicine. I am also certain that my broad expertise will ber of editorial board.
