About the Journal

Steel Structures & Construction deals with the design, construction, maintenance, and application of science and engineering principles to improve the steel materials.

The journal includes a wide range of fields in its discipline to create a platform for the authors to make their contribution towards the journal and the editorial office promises a peer review process for the submitted manuscripts for the quality of publishing.

Journal of Steel Structures & Construction is an Open Access journal and aims to publish most complete and reliable source of information on the discoveries and current developments in the mode of original articles, review articles, case reports, short communications, etc. in all areas of the field and making them freely available through online without any restrictions or any other subscriptions to researchers worldwide.

The journal is using Editorial Manager System for quality in review process. Editorial Manager is an online manuscript submission, review and tracking systems. Review processing is performed by the editorial board members of JJournal of Steel Structures & Construction or outside experts; at least two independent reviewers approval followed by editor approval is required for acceptance of any citable manuscript. Authors may submit manuscripts and track their progress through the system, hopefully to publication. Reviewers can download manuscripts and submit their opinions to the editor. Editors can manage the whole submission/review/revise/publish process.

Structural Design

Structural design is the methodical investigation of the stability, strength and rigidity of structures. The basic objective in structural analysis and design is to produce a structure capable of resisting all applied loads without failure during its intended life.

Steel is a commonly used construction material because it possesses exceptional strength, high stiffness, excellent toughness, and good ductility.  At a macro level, steel is homogeneous and isotropic.  It exhibits more uniform properties in all directions than other construction materials and as a result makes analysis and design more straightforward.  Its properties can also be enhanced by alloying, work hardening and tempering.

Because of its high strength-to-weight ratio, a steel structure is relatively lightweight, which means it can achieve a more favorable live-to-dead load ratio.  Structures made from steel can span relatively large distances and offer more usable space.  As far as fabrication goes, steel can be hot or cold rolled, welded, cast or forged into different shapes.  It can be drilled, punched, sheared, mechanically or thermally cut and bent.  It can also be repaired if needed.  It offers engineers and designers flexibility in design, alacrity in construction, and ease of maintenance and inspection.

Steel is considered a sustainable material as it can be reused and is fully recyclable.  The use of electric arc furnace in modern day steelmaking means the amount of energy used in steel production can be greatly reduced.

Despite these attributes, steel is rather expensive when compared with other construction materials.  It has the tendency to corrode and because it is a good conductor of heat and electricity, it needs to be fireproofed.  In addition, steel elements that are slender are susceptible to buckling and require special design considerations.  Improper fabrication, heat treatment, welding, design and detailing can lead to cracks and premature failure.  Because of these shortcomings, active research is constantly underway not only to address these issues but to develop novel and innovative ways to improve upon the design and performance.

The Journal of Steel Structures and Construction (JSSC) is an open access journal that provides a platform for researchers to share their analytical, experimental and/or numerical work related but not limited to the material science, processing, fabrication and production of steel, as well as the analysis, design, erection, inspection, maintenance, retrofit and rehabilitation of steel structures.  Original manuscripts, editorials, case studies and technical notes that address enhancing the properties, reducing the production cost, promoting the sustainability of steel, and articles that deal with innovative analysis, design and construction of steel structures are all welcome.
