The Institute was founded in 2002, as the aggregation of four pre-existing institutes: the institute for Geo-marine research South in Naples, where the IAMC headquarters are located, the operative unit of Mazara del Vallo (with a satellite unit in Castellammare del Golfo), that origins from the Institute for the Marine Resources and Environment (IRMA), the operative unit of Messina, formerly Experimental Thalassographic Institute and the operative unit in Taranto, formerly Thalossographic Institute “A.Cerutti”. In addition there is the operative unit in Oristano, that derives from the former Sensorial Systems and Marine Environment section of the Cybernetics and Geophysics Institute in Genoa and the unit of Capo Granitola that has been recently created (2007).
