Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements (IRMM) comes under the Joint research Centre (JRC). This institute mainly works on the production and dissemination of quality assurance tools like validated methods, reference measurements, reference materials, interlaboratory comparisons and training in best practices and experience in all areas where IRMM is working. It covers a large area of problems that may range from food safety to environmental pollution. The results they get have a direct impact on the daily life of the people. The core competencies of IRMM includes the development, production and distribution of reference materials, the development and validation of methods for food and feed analysis, bio-analysis, isotopic measurements, neutron physics and radionuclide metrology. These competencies are then applied in a variety of research fields like food and feed safety and quality, food allergen research, biotechnology, sustainable agriculture, environment, health, nanotechnology and nuclear safety and security among others.
