It is mainly established to train Connecticut ministers in theology and sacred languages.  It awarded the first Ph.D. in the United States in 1861 and organized as a university in 1887.

It is mainly divided into 12 constituent schools. The main one is undergraduate school, the graduate school of Arts and Sciences and ten professional schools. It has got three campuses, one in downtown New Heaven, another one is Yale Bowl in Western Heaven and the other one in New England.
