1 Macules and papules with erythema and violaceous discoloration on the eyelids, proximal interphalangeal joints and metacarpophalangeal joints.
2 Positive muscle biopsy
3 Elevation of muscle enzymes
4 EMG evidence with a triad of:
a) short small polyphasic motor units
b) fibrillation, positive sharp waves, insertional irritability
5 Proximal muscle weakness
  Possible DM = rash + 1 other
Probable DM = rash + 2 other
Definite DM = rash + 3 other
