Figure 1: Artichoke present as a densely stained, flat sheets with sharp-cornered borders (A). The individual cells are elongated and polygonal to rectangular in shape. The cellular boundary appears shared because each angle of the cells is tightly joined. When seen individually or in small group, they resemble intermediate squamous cells seen in cervicovaginal smears (B). Asparagus smears have long chains of rectangular cells arranged end-to-end with discrete intercellular spaces between each cell junction (C). A recurrent light and dark pattern gives the impression of single-filing, which can be seen in mammary lobular carcinoma (D).
