Figure 5: Cancer cells take up glutamine at high rates to supply carbon and nitrogen to multiple pathways in addition to protein production. Because of the plasticity of the tumor metabolome, glutamine can provide sufficient carbon for high energy metabolites in cancers. Targeting the glutamine metabolism can decrease the rate at which cancer cells produce lactic acid.
