The cytoplasmic FAO reaction is a multistage process in which LCFAs are degraded to the multiple two carbon glycolysis intermediate (acetyl-CoA) as well as one three carbon component (propionyl-CoA) in the FAs that contain an odd number of carbon atoms. In this catabolic reaction, the reduced components of the OXPHOS reaction (NADH2, FADH2) are produced.
