Figure 2: Fold change in gene expression of renal cortical TNF – a in Lewis rats 16 weeks after nephrectomy (neph) or heterotopic renal transplantation from Fisher rats (Tx). Rats received either spironolactone (2.5 mg, spiro) or an equivalent volume of water (0.25 ml, H₂O) by gavage daily. All rats received 1.5 mg/kg/day of oral cyclosporine for 2 days prior to transplantation and 10 days post transplantation. Rats undergoing heterotopic renal transplantation and receiving spironolactone had significantly elevated expression of TNF – a in the renal cortex compared to nephrectomized rats receiving water (*, p = 0.0136). When rats were divided and compared based on transplantation status alone, rats that received transplants had a significantly greater TNF – a expression compared to nephrectomy controls (p = 0.0023).
