    Cause

Folliculitis may be caused by bacteria, yeast or another type of fungus. If the follicles are injured, they are more likely to become infected. Follicles may get irrirated because of using a hot tub, whirlpool, or swimming pool that is not properly treated with chlorine, with substances like makeup, cocoa butter, motor oil, tar, and creosote. Iron deficiency anemia  is sometimes associated with chronic cases.

    Statistics

Seventy patients with a clinical diagnosis of Malassezia folliculitis were studied, of which 48 were confirmed on finding unipolar budding yeastlike organisms on gramstained microscopy or histology specimens. The epidemiologic and clinical features of these 48 cases (M = 44; F = 4) were analyzed.
