Tension-type headaches may be caused by muscle tension around the head and neck. Chronic contraction of the temporalis muscle caused by the teeth clenching is one of the main cause. Statistics: Average length of overuse was 3.9 years (range 1–30 years). In this population, the majority of subjects overused ergotamines (70 %, alone or combined with NSAIDs or caffeine), 33.9 % overused exclusively NSAIDs, 6.3 % combination drugs, and only 5.4 % triptan s alone (more than one type of triptans in some cases).
