Although transient exposure caused apoptosis, T cells acquired resistance to apoptosis when continuously exposed at low levels. The molecular changes found in continuously exposed T cells were also found in asbestos-exposed patients with pleural plaque ormalignant mesothelioma. These molecules are candidates for use as biomarkers and are important when considering the biological effects of asbestos and the induced reduction of tumor surveillance in the body. |
