Figure 2: Activation of microglia can potentiate remyelination during experimental model of demyelination: Administration of myelin debris during cuprizone-mediated demyelination can lead to accumulation and activation of microglia at the lesion. The presence of elevated astrocyte activity in conjunction with activated microglia, may enhance the clearance of myelin debris and this, in turn, may enhance remyelination (Top). Depletion of astrocytes during cuprizone-mediated demyelination inversely regulates microglial activation, which may result in poor clearance of myelin debris and delay in remyelination (Bottom).
