Figure 3: Effect of co-administration of mitomycin C and cisplatin with or without the administration of B.aristata on the rate of on NADH dehydrogenase and succinate dehydrogenase of liver mitochondria. The animals were divided into four groups of six animals each. Group-1, received saline, Group-2, received a single dose of mitomycin C (2 mg/kg body weight, i.p.) and cisplatin (12 mg/ kg body weight, i.p). Rats were sacrificed 48 h after the administration of drugs. Group-3, received alcoholic extract of B.aristata (10 mg/100 g body weight, oral) for three days. Group- 4 received alcoholic extract of B.aristata (10 mg/100 g body weight, oral) for three days, followed by single dose of mitomycin C (2 mg/ kg body weight, i.p) and cisplatin (12 mg/kg body weight, i.p). Rats were sacrificed 48 h after the administration of drugs. NADH dehydrogenase assay: 20 µg of mitochondrial protein was used for each assay NADH (10 mM) was used as substrate. NADH dehydrogenase activity was expressed as NADH units/min/ mg protein. (One NADH Unit = One n mole of potassium ferricyanide reduced / min/ mg /protein). Succinate dehydrogenase assay: 30 µg of mitochondrial protein was used for each assay. Succinate (9 mM) was used as substrate. SDH activity was expressed as SDH units/ min/ mg protein. (One SDH Unit + One n mole of DCPIP reduced/min/ mg protein). Results are expressed relative to control which was taken as 100. The control values of NADH dehydrogenase and succinate dehydrogenase were 2750 + 20 and 146 + 20 respectively in liver mitochondria. *P<0.05, **P <0.01, ***P<0.001. Values are Mean ± SD for at least 13 animals.
