Figure 4: Role of HIF-1α. HIF is a heterodimer consisting of an unstable α-subunit and a β-subunit. In the absence of oxygen and other factors HIF-1α is activate which leads to the activation of all the glycolytic enzymes producing lactate from pyruvate which is transported out of the cell adding to the malignant phenotype.
