Eating Disorders

  • Eating Disorders

There are four eating disorders that are recognised by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), which are Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder and Other Specified Feeding and Eating Disorders (OSFED) Eating disorders are estimated to affect approximately 9% of the Australian population. Research conducted with young people in 2010 on behalf of the NEDC indicated that: 4.3% of respondents said they know one person who may have an eating disorder, 62.8% said they know up to five people who may have an eating disorder. The treatment that is chosen will depend on a variety of factors, such as the type and severity of the eating disorder, along with the person’s age, family situation, relationships, mental condition, physical condition and social issues. Seeking help as early as possible greatly reduces the severity, duration and impact of an eating disorder.
