The term edema refers to the accumulation of fluid in the body. This fluid retention is also referred to as dropsy or hydropsy.
1.6% of population self-reported having oedema in Australia 2001 (ABS 2001 National Health Survey, Australia’s Health 2004, AIHW).
When the underlying cause of edema is treated, the swelling usually clears up but a doctor may also recommend some measures that can be taken to decrease fluid retention such as losing weight, exercising regularly and avoiding standing for long periods.
Diuretics or water pills may also be prescribed to help reduce fluid build-up.
