  • Oesophageal cancer is malignant tumours found in the tissues of the oesophagus. Symptoms include: hoarseness or coughing, pain behind the breastbone and/or heartburn (reflux), difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) or painful swallowing (odynophagia).
  • Oesophageal cancer affects about 1400-1500 people in Australia each year. It is rarer, making up above 1% of cancer cases in men and upto 0.8% of cancer cases in women. These cancers are usually found in people over the age of 60 but can sometimes occur in younger people.
  • Researchers worked in conjunction with Queensland, New South Wales and Victorian research institutes to collect lifestyle data and healthy and cancerous tissue samples from more than 1,000 endoscopy patients in the hope of explaining the exponential increase in oesophageal cancer cases.
