Biography
Dr. Alcira Batlle, Born in Argentine. Studies: Elementary School, at the Model Institute F.F. Bernasconi, BAires, High School: at the School teachers President D. F. Sarmiento, university: at the Universitary School of Sciences at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA), graduated as Chemist, Lic. in Biochemistry, Lic. In Technological Chem., Dr. in Chemistry in UBA, 1960 & Ph.D. in Sciences, in the University of London (UK) 1962. She had been awarded Internal and external Fellowships from the National Research Council (CONICET).. She is Superior Researcher at the Career for Science Researcher at CONICET. She has been the Founder and Director of the National Research Center for Porphyrins and Porphyrias (CIPYP), one of the Research Institutes of the CONICET and UBA (1978). She has performed all her teaching Career at the School of Sciences, UBA; she has been Full Professor since 1965. She is Member of The National Academy of Medical Sciences and more than 25 other Science Societies. She has performed many academic activities in her University, the CONICET and the Secretary of Science and Technology. She has published 490 original research papers in prestigious Journals, written 10 books, as well as numerous chapters in Books. She has edited 12 special Issues in various International Sci. Journals, given hundred of Courses, organized 7 International Meetings, she has attended hundred of Scientific Research Meetings presenting more than 900 papers and opening lectures. She has supervised 52 PhD Thesis, from Ph.D. students in her country and abroad, and hundred of pieces of research. She has been jury member of the Jury evaluating the delivery of the Thesis work of more than 40 Ph.D. students from her country and 10 Ph.D students from abroad (South Africa, India, Australia, Spain) She has had a very active collaboration with many colleagues from her country, and many other countries in the world. She has been serving as an Editorial Member of the Editorial Board of many International Science Journals, also as an expert reviewer for both numerous scientific papers from many highly recognized International Journals, Grant Applications, and expert reviewer for rate evaluations, invited and requested by the Universities (Univ. of Cape Town) or Scientific Agencies also abroad (Perú) Her area of science knowledge is Biological and Medical Sciences, her expertise is the Study of Porphyrins in normal and pathological conditions, the Porphyrias and related pathologies, and their Molecular Biology, the photodynamic and non-photodynamic properties of Porphyrins. She has developed several therapies, the treatments for all inherited Porphyrias, some acquired Porphyrias, lead intoxication, the enzyme replacement Therapy, the Photodynamic Therapy for cancer using aminolevulic acid (a precursor of haem) as a prodrug (PDT-ALA). She has developed a good number of new technologies and methodologies. She has been a pioneer in several areas of her research, mechanisms of enzymes action, detection of enzyme intermediates by using immobilized substrates or enzymes. the identification of the ALA and GABA transporters through membranes. She has also developed new Systems of teaching at the universitary level, for her contribution in this field, given a 3-4 weeks per year Course on The personalized System of Teaching, for 7 consecutive years, the Universitary Institute of Teaching and the Univ. of Venezuela, honored her with a special plate displaying the shield of the country, and the reasons of the tribute to Prof. Batlle She has received more than 30 awards and honors both from her country and abroad., as well as around 250 research grants from very many sources, mainly the CONICET. She has built twice the CIPYP laboratories, a model in architecture, in the School of Sciences first and then in the School Hospital "Gral José de San Martín" (UBA), with special grants awarded by the CONICET, the Secretary of Sience and Techonology and the Ministry of Education.
