Alireza Salmanzadeh, a doctoral student in Engineering Science and Mechanics, is the 2012 Virginia Tech Graduate Man of the Year. He is the author of more than 30 journal articles, conference papers and presentations that cover diverse areas from vortex dynamics to respiratory flows inside insects, to the development of a device that may one day help isolate cancer cells for early cancer detection. Alireza was co-chair of the first Virginia Tech cancer research symposium, a co-organizer of the first interdisciplinary research day at our university in 2011, co-chair of the first interdisciplinary research symposium at Virginia Tech, and is chair of the Graduate Student Association (GSA) research symposium this year. He is also a recipient of the ESM Manual Stein Scholarship, has received best poster awards, and a best essay award. He has served as a GSA board member, as vice president of NanoVT, and as the president and graduate advisor of the Iranian Society at Virginia Tech. He co-founded and was vice president of the first Interdisciplinary Research Honor Society in the United States, Iota Delta Rho. After he graduates, Alireza hopes to advance cancer research.
