Dr. Amar Klar pioneered the field of epigenetics by discovering the first gene, named MAR1/SIR2, and implicated it in the gene-silencing phenomenon in budding yeast in the late 70s. His group also discovered other gene-silencing factors, named CLR (crytic loci regulatory factors), in fission yeast. Dr. Klar also discovered the DNA strand-specific imprinting mechanism for mating-type switching in fission yeast. This unique mechanism showed that developmentally asymmetric cell division results from the double helical structure of DNA combined with replication history of DNA strands. This asymmetric cell division mechanism has been advanced to explain the etiology of psychoses, sporadic breast cancer, and hand-use preference in humans and for vertebrate body laterality development.
