Ashley T Martino

St John’s University, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Queens, NY, USA

He has been involved in clinically relevant molecular biology research since 2001. He began as a Research Assistant during his Bachelor’s Degree at CSUN. The research identified unique cancer cell antigens. While working on his Bachelor’s Degrees he was employed as a laboratory assistant at Ceres Inc., Malibu, Ca. Following completion of his Bachelors degree, he moved to Gainesville, Fl in 2002 to work at University of Florida as a Biological Scientist. His job responsibilities were biodistribution / Toxicology studies of viral gene therapy vectors. He worked with mice, rabbits and human samples. The data he collected was audited by the FDA so he learned GLP techniques.  In 2003, he began his PhD at University of Florida in viral gene therapy. Specifically, he used viral gene therapy to limit lung damage and infections related to cystic fibrosis. He completed his PhD in Dec 2007 and he began his Post Doctoral Fellowship in January 2008 at the University of Florida. His post-doc work was related to assessing both innate and adaptive immune responses to viral gene therapy vectors and developing approaches to overcome immunity to improve long-term viral gene correction. As a post-doc he learned to: 1- Measure innate and adaptive immune responses in liver and skeletal muscle tissue, 2- Develop immune tolerance to viral vectors, 3- Measure viral gene correction following liver and skeletal muscle delivery of viral vectors, 4- Assess liver and skeletal muscle pathology from tissue sections. He finished his Post-Doctoral Fellowship in September 2011 and he began his independent research career at St John’s University in January 2012 .His current work is related to assessing how hormones and hormone based drugs such as glucocorticoids regulate viral gene therpy. Additionally, his lab is working to package non-genomic cargo in viral capsids as a nano-particle drug delivery system. He has 18 publications: 2 senior author, 8 first author, 2 chapters and 6 contributing author. He is a review editor for the following journals: PLos One, Human Gene Therapy, Frontiers in Immunology and In-vitro Toxicology.
