GEOFF Carr Lupus Clinical Research Fellow, Centre for Prognosis Studies in The Rheumatic Diseases, Toronto Western Hospital, Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Biography
Dr Sheane is a medical graduate of Trinity College, Dublin. He completed a research fellowship at St James’s Hospital/Trinity College between 2007 and 2010, undertaking an MD thesis examining novel risk factors and correlates for cardiovascular disease in inflammatory arthritis, culminating in a number of presentations at national and international scientific meetings. During this time he established an Early Arthritis Clinic to eliminate delays in assessing and treating patients with potentially deforming and disabling forms of arthritis. He also pioneered the Smoking Cessation Incentives Programme, an education-based patient-centred course involving a multidisciplinary team to encourage and assist patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis to quit smoking. In 2012, he began a clinical research fellowship in both the Lupus and Psoriatic Arthritis programmes with the University of Toronto at Toronto Western Hospital. The Lupus Clinic under Dr Murray B Urowitz has spanned 5 decades and has informed much of the established knowledge pertaining to SLE/lupus in that time, as well as playing key roles in the development of lupus-related outcome measures. The Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA) program set up by Dr Dafna Gladman in 1978 is equally renowned for its influence on contemporary knowledge of this disease. Both programmes are actively involved in international guideline formulation and in clinical trials of which Dr Sheane was a co-investigator in 5 separate phase III studies. During his fellowship, Dr Sheane examined a number of research topics including (in lupus) mortality, steroid use and long-term outcomes, cardiovascular disease, and (in PsA) attainment of minimal disease activity/remission with biologic treatments. Dr Sheane is currently part of a pan-Canadian initiative to establish comprehensive recommendations for the investigation and treatment of SLE. Dr Sheane has a broad range of interests across the field of Rheumatology, including fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis, with sub-specialty expertise in PsA/spondyloarthritis, SLE and cardiovascular disease in inflammatory arthritis.
