Biography
Dr. Ashis Bhattacherjee is a Professor of the Department of Mining Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India. He was the Head of the Department of Mining Engineering during 2003-2006. Dr. Bhattacherjee received his Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering in 1980 and Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering and Management in 1983 from Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad, India. He was awarded the M.S degree in Operations Research from Florida Institute of Technology, Florida, USA in 1984. He was also awarded the Ph. D. degree in Mining Engineering and Operations Research from the Pennsylvania State University, University Park Campus, USA in 1991. Dr Bhattacherjee was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow of the Pennsylvania State University during the period 1991-1992. He has investigated several externally funded projects in India, the USA and France on occupational health and safety, injury epidemiology and operations research during the past 25 years. He guided over 50 graduate students including 8 doctoral students. Dr. Bhattacherjee is the author of over 120 research publications in technical journals, and conference proceedings. He is the co-author of over 20 technical reports. Dr. Bhattacherjee served as a member during the last 20 years in several committees of the Ministries of Government of India including the Ministry of Labor and Employment, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Ministry of Information Technology, Ministry of Coal, and Ministry of External Affairs. Dr. Bhattacherjee is the recipient of several awards and Honors including the Eminent Mining Engineering Award by the Institution of Engineers, India in 2012. His current research interests include occupational health and safety in mines, injury epidemiology, safety analytics, mine management, operations research, and quality engineering.
