Biography

Dr. White received his undergraduate degree in economics from Lake Forest College, IL, and then a M.S. and Ph.D. in physiology and biophysics from the University of Illinois in Urbana, IL. After a post-doctoral fellowship at UAB in the vascular biology and hypertension program, he joined the UAB faculty, achieving Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiovascular Disease in 2001. Dr. White’s research program focuses on two areas: (1) the mechanism of oxidative tissue injury in models of acute and chronic inflammation; and (2) the role of dyslipidemia in the development of inflammation and diabetic vascular complications. An altered metabolism of lipoproteins is thought to contribute to increased cardiovascular risk and vascular remodeling. The role of macrophages in mediating vascular inflammation in the setting of altered lipid metabolism is also a topic of study.
