Christopher Orton, a Colorado State University veterinary heart surgeon and a WSU alum, has been hired as the new head of the Department of Clinical Sciences. Orton has built a premier program at CSU in canine heart surgery, noted for its high success rate.Orton has served as interim department head for the past 18 months; he will assume the post on a permanent basis starting July 1.Orton earned his bachelor’s degree in zoology at Oregon State University, 1974; his doctor of veterinary medicine at Washington State University, 1978; a master’s degree in clinical sciences at The Ohio State University, 1982; and a doctorate in cardiopulmonary physiology at CSU, 1989. He completed his residency in small-animal surgery at The Ohio State University, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Cardiopulmonary Research Laboratory at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. He is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons and serves as an associate editor for the Journal of Veterinary Cardiology.
