Dr. Eva Schmelzer is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. She came to Pitt in this role in 2008. In 1998, she received her Diploma in Biology from the Georg-August-University in Göttingen, Germany. She completed her PhD studies on liver cell biology in the lab of Dr. Augustinus Bader at the German Research Center for Biotechnology in Braunschweig, Germany, and received her PhD in Biology (summa cum laude) from the Technical University Braunschweig, Braunschweig, Germany, in 2002. She performed postdoctoral studies on cell biology and liver stem cell biology in the labs of Dr. Augustinus Bader (University of Leipzig, Germany), Dr. Lola M. Reid (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina), and Dr. Christof Niehrs (German Cancer Research Center, Heidelberg, Germany). Dr. Schmelzer’s major research interests include stem cells, especially those of the liver, their characterization, and their role in development and pathological conditions. She is also interested in translating these findings to applications in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. Dr. Schmelzer is a member of the International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR). She is an Invited Editor for World Journal of Hepatology. She is also a reviewer for many publications, including but not limited to, Cells Tissues Organs, Differentiation,Expert Review of Medical Devices, Expert Opinion on Biological Therapies, FEBS Journal, Hepatology, Stem Cells and Development, and Tissue Engineering.
