Fannie Onen, MD, PhD is an internationally known researcher, clinician, and educator in the fields of geriatrics and sleep medicine. She is Medical Director of Investigations and Complex Treatments Day Care Unit, Department of Geriatrics, Bichat Hospital, University of Paris, France and Adjunct Associate Professor of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA. Prior to working in the Bichat University Hospital in Paris, Dr. Onen served as Assistant Professor at the Department of Geriatrics, University of Lyon, France.

Dr Onen received her MD from the University of Lyon Medical School, France. She is the recipient of the Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Fellowship, University of Lyon. She earned her PhD at the University of Paris. In 2008, Dr. Onen launched the International Association of Sleep Research in Gerontology, and in 2010 the first Aging and Sleep International Meeting. She is also founder and President of the Committee of National Geriatric Sleep Medicine of The French Geriatrics and Gerontology Society. She together with Dr. Hakki Onen has created Geriatric Sleep Medicine as an academic certificate in both the University of Paris and the University of Lyon, France. Under their pioneering and investment in patient care, research, teaching and consecutive Aging and Sleep International Meetings, Geriatric Sleep Medicine has become a medical branch.

Dr Onen’s research has spanned the areas of sleep related breathing disorders, especially development of clinical tools to assess sleep apnea, excessive daytime sleepiness and CPAP treatment adherence. Her research interests are also in the pathophysiology of sleep apnea and its relationship to frailty, cardiovascular disease, cognitive impairment and disability in older adults, and patient education for CPAP treatment. Some of the research produced by Dr Onen has had an important impact on clinical practice. She was the first to publish a clinical test named ONSI to screen sleep apnea in hospitalized or institutionalized older adults. She has also developed a sleepiness scale, ODSI, for older adults. She co-edited the first Sleep Medicine Dictionary (Dictionnaire de Médecine du Sommeil) in French, later translated to Spanish and Italian. In addition to extensive personal scientific achievements and peer reviewed publications

 Dr. Onen has directed the clinical training programs in both sleep medicine and geriatrics and supervised research activities. She has been and continues to be an invited speaker at multiple national and international meetings, and has collaborations with other investigators in Europe and in the USA.
