Biography
Was born in Ghent, Belgium, in 1940. He studied medicine at the Gent University, and specialised in internal medicine, endocrinology and metabolic diseases. He was full professor at Ghent University Hospital until he retired in 2005. He has devoted much attention to male infertility, healthy aging, and environmental health hazards. His recent research was devoted to the benefit of food supplementation for the treatment of the infertile couple and of patients with myalgic encephalopathy. He served as a member of the steering committee on infertility of the World Health Organisation. He was the first chief-editor of “International journal of Andrology”, edited several textbooks, published more than 400 scientific papers, and presented in excess of 450 scientific lectures in congresses all over the world. In addition, he was member of the board of directors of the Royal Belgian Cynological society (Saint Hubert) from 1995 to 1999, and member of the special committee for the assessment of hip dysplasia. He was a municipal counsellor of the village he lives in from 2000 to 2006 and from 2010 to 2012. He was lecturer at the international academy of osteopathy in Ghent, and coordinator of the scientific committee of this technical university from 2007 to 2014. In 2013 he was awarded the medal of “Grand Officer of the Order of the Crown”, which is the highest honour for civil merit granted in Belgium. He also received the gold medal of the “Belgian Order of Medical Doctors” after 50 years of medical practice in 2014.
