Hans Gaines

Biography

 Hans Gaines is M.D. with postgraduate specialization in infectious diseases and also in clinical immunology. He presented his PhD thesis in 1989 on primary HIV infection and is since 1996 associate Professor at the Karolinska Institute. Since 1993, he has been associate Professor at the Swedish Institute for Communicable Disease Control (Smittskyddsinstitutet, SMI), employed as Head of the Division of Clinical Immunology, of Cellular Immunlogy, Deputy Head Department of Vaccinology and Immunology, etc. On a government mission to SMI 2011, Gaines reviewed the laboratory activites and functions of SMI and also of other agencies and clinical microbiological laboratories in Sweden and presented a report recommending a laboratory network for microbiology and protection against communicable diseases. From February 2012, Gaines is acting Head of the Department of Preparedness for food- and waterborn diseases, biorisk management and the biosafety laboratory for highly pathogenic (P3 and P4 security level) microorganisms. He is also a member of the Directorate of the Swedish Institute for Communicable Disease Control.
