He has been a member of the faculty at UC Berkeley since 1998, currently as Associate Professor in Biostatistics and previously as Adjunct Professor in Environmental Sciences/Biostatistics. His research focuses on the theory and application of mathematics statistics to population studies and he has particular expertise in semi-parametric models in causal inference, as well as methods in computational biology. He has worked as well on projects ranging from molecular biology, wildlife biology, epidemiology, and climate, but has recently focused on molecular studies of aging, infectious disease and social epidemiology. He teaches courses in Epidemiological Statistics, Categorical Data Analysis, Causal Inference, Longitudinal Data and Methods in Social Epidemiology.
