Dr. Khalil has sought to enable the deployment of Wireless Ad Hoc and Sensor networks (WAHAS) in situations where the data is critical, e.g., the monitoring of environmental conditions in a public place like an airport. He has developed a comprehensive suite of protocols to enable mobility in such environments, e.g., cars communicating reliably and securely with one another in an ad-hoc network. He has developed the primitive called local monitoring whereby a node in a network can monitor the runtime behavior of neighboring nodes. This primitive can be applied to the detection of a large class of attacks in WAHAS networks.
Dr. Khalil’s research interests span the areas of wireless and wireline communications networks. He is especially interested in security, routing, and performance of wireless sensor, ad hoc and mesh networks. Dr. Khalil’s current research is geared towards systems’ security including cloud computing security, smart grid/city security, and E-Health security.
