Biography

Professor Jacques Ricard has received his doctoral degree from the University of Paris (Paris Sorbonne) the 18th of June 1957. To a large extent, his thesis was devoted to problems of mathematical biology. He has occupied the following positions: Research Associate, Cornell University; Associate, then Full Professor of Biochemistry, University of Aix-Marseille and Director of the CNRS Center of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (about 100 persons); Professor of Biophysics University of Paris 7 and Director of the Jacques Monod Institute (about 400 persons). Jacques Ricard retired in 1999 and had written about 160 scientific papers, most of them in English, three books (in French), three books (in English) and one E-book (in English). He has served as an editorial member of several journals such as : Journal of Theoretical Biology, European Journal of Biochemistry, Plant Cell and Environment, Plant Science Letters. In recent years, most of his work has been devoted to supramolecular complexity and dynamics of multienzyme reactions in fuzzy organized media. An example of this type of study is to be found in a book he has published some years ago and entitled “ Biological Complexity and the Dynamics of Life Processes.” Elsevier, Amsterdam, New York 1999. One could summarize the central idea of his work by stating that his main concern has been to explain the complex behaviour of biological systems in terms on nonequilibrium thermodynamics and mathematics. Moreover, during his scientific career, Jacques Ricard has been involved in different activities related to Science. As a Chairman of the “Interest group on Kinetics and Mechanisms of Enzymes and Metabolic networks” of the International Union of Biochemistry (1983-1989) he was involved in the organization of international meetings. This Interest Group of IUB has organized meetings on a periodic basis. The first, financed by NATO, took place in Marseilles in 1983. Two others were organized during the summer of 1985 in Rome and Debrecen, Hungary, and were supported by FEBS and IUB. One meeting took place in Beijing, China during 1986 and the last one was organized in Italy, near Lucca. In addition of his scientific activity, J. Ricard has also been involved in the Philosophy of Science. He has published in this field a book (“Pourquoi le Tout est plus que la somme de ses parties” Paris Hermann 2008) and about twenty papers, most of them in English. Last he has received the Silver Medal of the CNRS and has been elected at the French National Academy of Science and at the International Academy of Philosophy of Science.
