Kelvin did his undergraduate training at the University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University, graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Kinesiology in 1991. He began working with Prof. Parveen Bawa in his last year as an undergraduate and continued his graduate studies under her supervision, receiving his PhD (Neuroscience) in 1996. He then traveled to Sweden for two years to learn microneurography in the lab of Prof. Åke Vallbo (now maintained by Dr Johan Wessberg), then spent a couple years as a postdoctoral fellow at the Spinal Cord Research Centre before moving to London, England for a Research Fellow position in the Sensorimotor Control Lab working with Prof. Daniel Wolpert's group. He joined the University of Alberta in 2002 on a short-term contract, securing salary support from AHFMR for a 5-year period.
