Biography
Dr. Luc Kestens is a professor in Immunology of Tropical Infectious diseases at the University of Antwerp. He is also a professor in the Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM). He obtained the degree of Master of Science in Biology from the University of Antwerp, Belgium. He joined the Laboratory of Pathology and experimental schistosomiasis of the Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) and obtained a PhD on parasite immunology. He was the first to publish the lack of association between HIV and the endemic form of Kaposi’s Sarcoma in Eastern Africa. He published more than 150 scientific papers in international peer review scientific journals.
Research Interest
Immunology of Tropical infectious diseases, Mechanism of resistance to infection in HIV-exposed seronegatives, Role of chronic Immune activation in the Immunopathogenesis of HIV, Evaluation of new and innovative instruments for counting CD4 T cells in countries with limited resources. Funded by WHO and Flemish Government, Immunopathogenesis of the tuberculosis-Inflammatory immune reconstitution disease (TBIRIS) in HIV-TB co-infected patients.
