Mark S. Bauer

 Professor 
Biography

 Mark Bauer, MD is Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.  He also is on staff at the VA Boston Healthcare System where he serves as Associate Director of the Center for Healthcare Organization and Implementation Research (CHOIR), a national VA Health Services Research and Development Center of Excellence.  Dr. Bauer’s major research focus has been on developing, testing, and implementing recovery-oriented care models for the seriously mentally ill that are integrated with medical model care and that flexibly respond to the needs of real-world clinical settings.  His scientific efforts have been consistently supported through competitive federal and foundation research awards.  His Life Goal Collaborative Care care model is listed on the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices.  Dr. Bauer is also the developer and Director of the VA National Bipolar Disorders TeleHealth Program, a novel strategy for implementing care management for this disorder across a national healthcare system using videoconferencing and secure messaging techniques.  Notably, he also has extensive experience as a healthcare administrator having served as Psychiatry Service Chief, Mental Health Service Line Director, and Acting Chief of Staff in the VA healthcare system.    Dr. Bauer has won regional and national awards for clinical care, teaching, research, and healthcare administration, including the Irma Bland Award for Excellence in Teaching Residents from American Psychiatric Association, the Gerald R. Klerman Senior Investigator Award from the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance, and the Distinguished Friend of Behavior Therapy Award from the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapy.  He has published over 125 peer-reviewed scientific articles and 6 books.
