Mary C. (Cindy) Farach-Carson, Ph.D. became Rice's first Vice Provost for Translational Bioscience and Scientific Director of the BRC in 2011. Previous to this, she served as Rice’s Associate Vice Provost for Research from 2009-11. She has been a Professor of Biochemistry and Cell Biology since July 1, 2009. She has a secondary appointment in Bioengineering and is a member of the Institute of Biosciences and Bioengineering. She also is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Genitourinary Medical Oncology at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, and an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the Baylor College of Medicine. She served as coordinator for the five-year renovation of research and teaching space in a campus building and also planned the building of a laboratory for the Center for Translational Cancer Research. She became the center's director in 2005. She served as a member of the University of Delaware Research Council and the state's Delaware Cancer Consortium. She is the author of over 135 peer-reviewed publications as well as numerous review articles and book chapters. She has served as a reviewer for many federal and private study section panels as well as many journals in her field.
Dr. Farach-Carson’s long-term research has focused on bone and extracellular matrix biology, with a particular current research focus on understanding how cancer cells grow in bone and in the use of cellular matrices for tissue engineering, Nanomaterial and Nanoparticle applications in Biomedicine.
