His field of research involves the chemical treatment of gypsum plasterboard waste to remove its fluoride content. The outcomes of his investigations are that: - He has developed an innovative method to immobilize fluoride by using high-performance calcium phosphate. The levels of fluoride are monitored in the chemical gypsum waste by using a novel pre-treatment method. He and his colleagues have devised a field test suitable for industrial sites that analyses the chemical content of gypsum waste. The above work has been adopted commercially by Japanese companies as a basis for treating and testing their plasterboard waste. His work has moved on to examine how the European union control and recycle gypsum plasterboard materials and Dr Tafu's visit to SERC was designed to further his investigations. He had meetings with Gordon Boyd of SERC who specialises in Waste management and Dr Julie-Anne Hanna of Questor. It is hoped that joint projects in recycling and chemical testing will develop from these discussions. Janice Cooke and David Milford set up a programme of visits for Dr Tafu during his time here to examine the plasterboard recycling industry in Northern Ireland. Baron Recycling Ltd (BRL) in Castledawson, MacNabb Waste Management Ltd in Downpatrick and ReCon Waste Management in Portadown held discussions with professor Tafu and provided him with information to develop his understanding of recycling and its developments in NI and the European Union.
