Biography

Dr. Mei Wei, professor and undergraduate committee chair of the Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) Department, has been appointed the UConn School of Engineering Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Education. she joined UConn MSE in 2002 as an Assistant Professor, and was promoted to Professor in 2012. During her time at UCONN, Dr. Wei’s research has focused on biomaterials, tissue engineering, biomaterial-cell interactions, and in vivo performance of biomaterials. She is also affiliated with the UConn Health Center Institute for Regenerative Engineering, working intensively on bone regeneration and scaffolding research. MSE congratulates Dr. Wei on her new position within the School of Engineering. Dr. Wei’s research has been focused on biomaterials, tissue engineering, organic and inorganic composites, ceramic coatings, biomaterial-cell interactions, and in vivo performances of biomaterials. Her main research falls into the following areas: (1) Fabrication of novel tissue engineering scaffolds for bone, cartilage and other tissue repair and regeneration; (2) Application of bioactive coatings on metallic implants for enhanced implant-host integration; (3) Fabrication of biodegradable ceramic-polymer fiber composites to be used as load-bearing bone fixation devices; (4) Syntheses of magnetic, biocompatible and biodegradable nanoparticles to be used for bioimaging, cancer treatment and drug delivery

Research Interest

Fabrication of novel tissue engineering scaffolds for bone and osteochondral repair Biomimetic apatite and apatite/collagen coatings for bone repair and drug delivery: In vitro and in vivo tests.
Establishment of in vivo time-lapsed imaging platform for in situ visualization of cell-scaffold interplay during new bone formation and remodeling.
Dense apatite-polymer fiber absorbable composites for medium- and high-load bearing skeletal repair applications
