In 1987 Prof. Hortsch received his Ph.D. from the University of Heidelberg in Germany. Currently he holds the position of Associate Professor of Cell and Developmental Biology and of Medical Education at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor/Michigan. His past research has focused on the role of neural cell adhesion molecules during development. Currently, he is interested in the development of novel electronic teaching resources and how these new teaching devices influence students’ learning. Based on his research and teaching he has received several awards and honors, such as the 2012 Kaiser Permanente Award for Excellence in Pre-clinical Teaching from the University of Michigan Medical School and the 2013 University of Michigan Provost's Teaching Innovation Prize. He is serving as an editorial member of several reputable journals like Cellular & Molecular Biology Letters, Frontiers in Bioscience, the International Journal of Cell Biology, and the Journal of Cytology & Histology. He has authored over 95 research and review articles and books, including an educational mobile app and a series of eBooks. He is a member of the American Society for Cell Biology, the American Association of Anatomists, and the International Association of Medical Science Educators.
