N. Scott Litofsky

Biography

N. Scott Litofsky, MD, is a professor and chief of the division of neurological surgery at the University of Missouri School of Medicine. Before joining the faculty at the Hugh E. Stephenson, Jr., MD, Department of Surgery in 2004, Dr. Litofsky was an assistant professor and an associate professor at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. While there, he was the director for medical student education for the Division of Neurological Surgery. He was a member of the NCI-funded program project, Neural Stem Cells and Neuro-Oncology, serving as the principle investigator for the cell acquisition and maintenance core. Since joining MU, Dr. Litofsky has served numerous roles throughout the Division of Neurological Surgery. He joined as an associate professor and vice chief of the Division and was also appointed Director of Neuro-oncology and Radiosurgery. He became Division chief in 2005 and was promoted to full professor in 2007. Currently, he serves as the program director for the residency training program in neurological surgery. In addition to Dr. Litofsky’s clinical and educational duties at MU, he is also the neurosurgical liaison to the trauma center. He serves as coordinating editor for Practical Reviews in Neurosurgery and is on the editorial boards for Case Reports in Neurological Medicine, CardioRenal Medicine, and Journal of Tumor. He has written or co-authored over 60 peer-reviewed publications and 20 book chapters. His current research involves clinical and laboratory studies investigating relationships between neural stem cells and brain tumors, quality of life in brain tumor patients, and the impact of anemia on outcome from traumatic brain injury Dr. Litofsky received his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical School in Houston in 1985, graduating as a member of Alpha Omega Alpha and receiving the National Service Award from Phi Delta Epsilon medical fraternity. He then completed residency training in neurological surgery at Los Angeles County + University of Southern California Medical Center in Los Angeles. Dr. Litofsky obtained board certification from the American Board of Neurological Surgery in 1995. He received the Young Investigator Award from the AANS/CNS Joint Section on Tumors in 1997 for his work on applying insights from neural stem cells to modify glioma behavior in a project entitled “What determines a benign glioma phenotype?”
