I have been granted my Ph.D. in the disciplines of Virology and Glycobiology in October 2008 after the oral defence of my Thesis entitled “Histoâblood group antigens ABH actors of the innate antiviral protection: examples of Caliciviruses (NV and RHDV) and the SARSâDuring the four years of my Ph.D., I extensively studied the interaction between viruses and carbohydrates belonging to the human blood group antigens and investigated the possible role of pathogens in the evolution of human glycome. I identified, in rabbit, an allele of Fut2 gene that has been associated with genetic resistance to the rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus. I also highlighted the protection effect of human milk mucins, decorated with human blood group antigens ABH and acting as decoy receptor against noroviruses. Finally, I proved the role of natural antibodies specific to ABH blood group antigen in preventing virus binding with the example of SARS-CoV, which is decorated with human glycans after replication in host cell.
