Dr Patries Herst received her PhD in Cancer Cell Biology in 2006 from the University of Otago in New Zealand. She currently holds a senior lecturer’s position at the Department of Radiation Therapy at the University of Otago, Wellington. Her responsibilities include: teaching in the Bachelor of Radiation Therapy (BRT) and supervising honours, masters and PhD students at the University of Otago and Victoria University of Wellington. Dr Herst has conducted several clinical trials that have investigated better ways to prevent and manage acute side effects caused by radiation therapy, such as skin reactions, oral mucositis and cystitis. Her pre-clinical research interests are focussed on radio-sensitisation of aggressive radio-resistant cancer cells such as glioblastoma multiforme. She has authored over 40 publications and in an expert reviewer for several scientific journals. Dr Herst is a committee member of the NZ Health and Disability Ethics Committee and the chair of the Animal Ethics Committee at the University of Otago, Wellington. She is the past president of the Wellington Health and Biomedical Research Committee and the current secretary of the NZ Society for Oncology.
