Peter Heutink

Genome Biology of Neurodegenerative Diseases, German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases, Tübingen, Germany
Biography

Dr. Heutink received his MSc in Biology from the University of Amsterdam. His PhD work was done at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam were he worked on mapping of complex human traits. In the following years he established his own research group in Rotterdam and he moved to the VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam to establish the section of Medical Genomics within the Department of Human Genetics and the newly founded Center for Neurogenomics and Cognitive Research (CNCR). Dr. Heutink is currently full professor and head of the section of Medical Genomics, the chairman of the Dutch Anthropogenetic Society and coordinator of Epidemiology of the Dutch center of excellence: the Center for Medical Systems Biology (CMSB). The research in Dr. Heutink's laboratory focuses on identifying and characterizing genes associated with neurologic disorders and especially neurodegenerative disorders such as dementia and parkinsonism. For these genetic studies Dr. Heutink uses patient material from families, the general population but also from genetically isolated populations. Dr. Heutink's laboratory is also involved in the genetics of behavioral traits such as attention, anxiety and depression using extensively phenotyped twins from the Netherlands Twin Registry. In recent years the laboratory has identified several genes associated with l diseases such as FTDP-17, Hemochromatosis, Benign Hereditary Chorea, Ataxia and early onset parkinsonism.
