Dr. P. Kiepiela has made a contribution to the advancement and promotion of science in South Africa in the field of laboratory-based research which has underpinned our understanding and management of major illnesses prevalent among our population. Her priority areas of research always reflect the killer diseases among the poor in this country ie measles, HIV/AIDS which threatens the very foundations of our country. She has mentored young and promising students at the University of Natal and built up a world-class HIV/AIDs pathogenesis laboratory at the DDMRI, at the University of Kwazulu/Natal. She has collaborated with a wide range of expert scientists from the US and the UK. She is currently working at the Medical Research Council, HIV Prevention Research Unit as a Chief Specialist Scientist lead programme continuing the work on HIV/AIDS pathogenesis.
