Pierre-Marie Girard, MD, PhD, is currently professor of Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine and Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine, Centre Hospitalo-Universitaire St Antoine, Paris, and University Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris VI, France and president of Institut de Médecine et Epidémiologie Appliquée, (IMEA) Fondation Internationale Léon Mba, Paris. Within the field of HIV research, his main interests initially included clinical research in treatment and prophylaxis of AIDS related opportunistic infections both in developed and developing countries. He was involved in numerous clinical trials of antiretroviral therapy since early nineties both in drug evaluation and antiretroviral strategies in the setting through multicenter national and international trials. He also investigated the long-term tolerability of HAART and access to antiretrovirals in developing countries. He has special interest in hepatitis B in HIV-infected patients, and in the evaluation of simplified HAART regimens and induction maintenance regimens. He acts as principal investigator of clinical trials of antiretroviral therapy both in France and Sénégal and in international groups. He currently coordinates the ANRS (French Agency for Research in AIDS and Hepatitis) site in Dakar, Senegal. He is also the coordinator of infectious diseases capacity building programs in Senegal and Benin.
